Bilbao – Gaztelugatxe – Gernika  –

San Sebastián – Pasajes – Hondarribia

Day 1: Bilbao

Cosmopolitan Bilbao is the ideal city to begin an adventure. Bilbao, with its stately palace buildings side by side with modern architectural wonders, is a perfect mix of the old world and the new. Housing modern art from across the globe, the city of Bilbao is sure to be found on any art lovers bucket list. We visit the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and considered to be a perfect combination of beauty and functionality. And of course, we visit the world renowned Guggenheim Museum. A masterpiece in itself, Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum has redefined Bilbao’s cultural heart.

Day 2: Bermeo - Gaztelugatxe - Gernika

Our late morning snack in Bermeo is on the dock of an authentic fisherman’s guild as we watch the morning’s catch being auctioned off to the restaurants. From here, we take a boat to the beautiful San Juan de Gaztelugatxe connected to the mainland only by a sprinkle of a stone path. We get a unique perspective as we arrive to it by sea. We then travel into dense forest of Bizkaia to visit one of the most emblematic enclaves of the territory, Gernika. A historic city with cobblestone streets and manor houses, it is delightful to roam about in. We will visit the Museum of Gernika and The Gernika Peace Museum, which takes visitors back to 1937, when bombs and fire rained down and the streets of Gernika were razed to the ground. Afternoon pleasures: Our hotel is nothing less than a magnificent castle near Gernika called the Castillo de Arteaga. This afternoon is pure pleasure: a chance to swim in the tower swimming pool, if the season is right, have a drink on the terrace, and simply breathe in some Bizkaia air.

Day 3: Zumaia - Getaria - San Sebastian

The Gipuzkoa coast is breathtaking. In Zumaia, we visit the renowned UNESCO Geopark where the unusual and beautiful Flysch and karst formations provide a rare chance to see 60 million years of geological history right before your eyes. Take some time to contemplate the raw spectacle of sea and rock combinations. Later, at lunch, we toast with a fine txakoli, the local sweet sparkly wine, in the Guetaria fishing village. Gourmet discovery remains high on the agenda as we arrive to San Sebastián – the haute-cuisine heart of Basque country. We reside in the beachside hotel for two nights. Afternoon pleasures: We dine on traditional Basque pintxos in the town’s historic centre.

Day 4: San Sebastian

We reserve a full day designed for exploring San Sebastian, as this really gives you a chance to get to know this amazing city. Highlights include a walking tour of the historic quarter  through the winding streets and along its beautiful old port. This is followed by a spa and beach session at the charming La Perla Spa on the Playa de la Concha, a seaside treat that gleams with an aristocratic nostalgia. We end the day with an evening meal in an outstanding Michelin-starred restaurant with views of the Atlantic ocean.

Day 5: San Sebastian - Hondarribia

Leaving San Sebastian, we sail on an antique schooner towards the border of Spain and France. This authentic early 20th century sailboat awaits us in the Concha Bay.  We sail east to Pasajes for an exquisite seafood meal in the delightful port where Victor Hugo once resided.

Your hotel is nothing less than a magnificent 10th century castle which will transport you to the Middle Ages. The luxurious interior, naked stone walls and gorgeous views of the French coast will make you want to stay put. But beyond the walls of the castle lie the colorful, eye-catching houses of the fishing quarter. With lively taverns and beautiful views of the sea, Hondarribia is not to be missed. Afternoon pleasures: We dine in the historic quarter in an authentic cofradia de pescadores – a fisherman’s guild – for what we believe to be is the best seafood in town.
